Workfront Maintenance Updates in 2022
The following maintenance updates have been made in 2022.
For maintenance updates prior to 2022, see Previous Maintenance Updates
Updates in December 2022
Accessibility updates in lists
Lists
The following accessibility features are now available in lists:
- Check boxes in lists now have a visible focus indicator when you tab to them. This makes keyboard navigation of items in a list easier to visually follow.
- All buttons in list toolbars now have consistent hover and focus states, with a gray background shown on hover and a gray background and blue outline shown on focus.
- Previously, when opening a drop-down menu in a list with the Space key, the menu would open and the page would also scroll down a bit, which was not intended. Now the page no longer scrolls when pressing Space on a drop-down, which is the correct intended behavior.
- When viewing a list with the row check box selected, you can now tab through each editable item and then press the Space key to switch to Edit Mode and begin editing that cell in the row. Previously, these items were not keyboard navigable and required the use of a mouse. Now switching to Edit Mode is both mouse and keyboard friendly.
“Whoops” error when creating a project from a template
Projects
When a user attempts to create a project from a template, the project is not created, and the user sees the following error:
“Whoops! Something went wrong. Please contact Workfront so we can figure out what went wrong and fix it.”
Combination chart displays the same data twice
Reports
When a user views a combination chart, the chart displays one value set twice instead of comparing two value sets. The correct value sets can be found in the report details.
Tooltips added for dimmed hour cells in timesheets
Timesheets
We have added tooltips to explain the reason why an hour cell might be dimmed in a timesheet. For example, some of the reasons could be because the timesheet is closed, or because the project is completed.
Deactivated users available when selecting timesheet approver
Timesheets
When a user is creating a timesheet and attempts to assign an approver, the drop-down list includes deactivated users. If a deactivated user is selected, the timesheet is not saved and the user sees the following message:
“Error. Sorry! Only users with Plan license can approve or reject timesheets. Please contact your system administrator.”
Since the deactivated user cannot be assigned, the user must select an activated user. The timesheet therefore functions as expected, but the deactivated users in the list may cause confusion or inconvenience to the user.
Cannot enter time on timesheet
Timesheets
When a user attempts to add time to a timesheet, they see that the hour boxes in any Project time or Task Tiem rows are grayed out, and they cannot enter time into these boxes. They can enter time only in the General Time area.
Smart user selection when adding approvers to an approval path
Approvals
We have improved the way users display when you add them to the Approvers field of a new approval.
Now, when you add a user to the Approvers field of a system-level or single-use approval, in addition to their name and avatar, their Primary Role and their email also display. This helps distinguish between multiple users with similar or identical names.
Project status does not follow Group project preferences
Projects
When a user creates a project from a template, the new project does not take the status set in the Group project preferences. If a project is created without a template, the status reflects Group project preferences as expected.
Cannot add subtask
Tasks
When a user attempts to add a subtask using the “+New” button, no options appear in the New Task window, and the user sees the following message:
“Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'validations)”
Errors when closing or saving timesheets
Timesheets
When a user attempts to add time to or close a timesheet, the timesheet does not save, and the user sees the following errors:
- Database error due to invalid SQL statement.
- Your recent changes were not saved. Refresh the page to view the last saved changes.
Inline editing errors by user do not cause error messages
Lists
When a user is inline editing an object and makes an error that should create an error message, no error message appears. The error itself is not saved into Workfront, so the data is not affected, but the lack of an error message may cause confusion.
This has been reported for the following situations:
- Predecessors: A predecessor loop is created, such as assigning a task to itself
- Dates: An impossible date is set, such as a Completion Date that is prior to the Start Date or that is beyond the Project Completion Date
“Move to” option not available on issue reports
Reports
When a user is viewing an issue report and attempts to move an issue, the “Move to” option is not available under the More (three-dot) menu.
Cannot close user card in update stream
Updates
When a user is viewing updates and hovers over a name, a card with details about the user whose name it is opens and does not close automatically. The page is unresponsive until the card is manually closed by clicking the X in the upper-right corner.
Task has a Kanban backlog order of 0
Agile
When a user is viewing a Kanban team’s backlog, one or more of the tasks show a backlog order of 0.
“Invalid custom expression” message when referencing “owner” in a calculated field
Custom forms
When a user is adding a calculated field to an issue-level custom form and attempts to add any reference to an “owner” (such as ownerID
), the field does not save, and the user sees the following message:
“This is an invalid customer expression, please try again.”
This occurs even when the expression is valid.
Cannot access elements of Workfront for Jira integration
Integrations
The following elements cannot currently be accessed in the Workfront for Jira integration for Jira Cloud:
- The Configuration page
- The “Open Workfront” button on a Jira issue
Adding custom message causes issue in Proof viewer
Proofs
When a user is sharing a proof and attempts to add a custom message, the following occurs:
- The Proof viewer zooms into the proof.
- The areas in the left navigation are no longer responsive.
Timesheet is not generated
Timesheets
Timesheets are not being generated despite timesheet profile settings. Because the timesheet is never generated, it is not available for the user to enter time, and it is not visible on lists.
Updates in November 2022
Documents placed in the Recycle Bin if unselected when moving a task or an issue
Documents
Now, when you deselect the Documents option in the process of moving a task or an issue, the documents attached to the task, or the issue will be placed in the Recycle Bin for 30 days. An administrator can restore them, if needed. The user who deselects Documents in the moving process will receive a warning about this behavior in the Move Task or Move Issue box. Prior to this enhancement, the documents were permanently deleted.
Hiding an item hides the incorrect item
Layout templates
When a user changes the whether an item is hidden or shown, those changes are reflected on a different item on the layout template.
Bulk editing tasks changes task assignments
Tasks
When a user bulk edits any field for a set of tasks, the Assignments of the first task are applied to all tasks. This deletes previous assignments.
Cannot open an interactive proof
Workfront Proof
When a user attempts to open an interactive proof, the proof does not open and the user sees the following message:
“Proof not loaded (501) Try again”
Issues with tasks added to an iteration
Agile
The following issues have been reported regarding issues added to an iteration:
-
Some subtasks of a task added to an iteration do not appear on the Iteration page.
-
When a user attempts to add a missing task to the iteration, the task is not added and the user sees the following message:
“The following error occurred: None of the selected items could be moved, because they are not assigned to an agile team or are not agile items”
Tasks assigned through bulk editing do not appear on team’s backlog
Agile
When a user assigns tasks to a Scrum team by using bulk editing, those tasks do not appear on the team’s backlog.
Kanban teams are not affected by this issue.
“New proof recipients” text box is too small
Proofs
When a user is viewing a proof and attempts to share the proof from the Sharing tab, the “New proof reciepients” text box is very small. The user can type in a name, but because the box is so small, the text wraps in a way that is difficult to read.
Report usage information is not updating
Reports
When a user views a report, Last Viewed information such as the Last Viewed Date and Last Viewed By are not updating. This means that any usage information may be incorrect.
This behavior has been reported when the user accesses the report in the following ways:
- Search
- Pins
- Favorites
- Recents
Accessing reports via a dashboard does update Last Viewed information.
Workfront: 500 error when making changes to a Workfront object+

New information icons for timesheets, timesheet profiles, and timesheet preferences
Workfront
note note |
---|
NOTE |
This update has been released only to the Preview environment. It will be released to Production with the 23.1 release. |
We have added several information icons to the following settings:
- “Can edit time” checkbox when creating or editing a timesheet or a timesheet profile to indicate that when enabled, approvers can also submit, reopen, or edit the timesheet, unless your administrator restricts these actions in the Timesheet Preferences area of Setup.
- “Restrict timesheet editing to owners and admins” in the Timesheet & Hour Preferences area of Setup to indicate that when disabled, the following users can also edit the timesheets: users with administrative access to timesheets and hours, timesheet approvers allowed to edit time, and timesheet owners’ managers.
Notice that the functionality of these settings has not changed and only the information icons have been added to add clarity to the scope of the settings.

Date picker no longer automatically opens on input focus or click
Navigation
When a user navigates by keyboard, date pickers are no longer automatically opened upon the date input receiving keyboard focus. Instead, keyboard users should tab to the date picker icon and press Enter to open the date picker. When a user navigates by mouse, date pickers are no longer automatically opened upon the date input being clicked. Instead, mouse users should click the date picker icon to open the date picker.
This change was made to better conform with standard date picker UX patterns and to create a more accessible experience for keyboard and screen reader users.

If you select a status associated with an approval process as the rejection status for an approval path, the rejected object moves to the selected status, and it will be marked as “Pending approval”. For example, if you select On Hold for the rejection status and the On Hold status is associated with an approval process, the rejected object is placed in the status of “On Hold- Pending approval”, requiring the approval.
Before this update, the object bypassed the approval process for the rejection status, and it was placed in the On Hold status.

Proof email notification update
Workfront Proof
Earlier this month, as part of a patch to the Workfront Production environment, we made some bug fixed to the proof email notification system. This change was not communicated in the maintenance update when it was released. We’ve added the following information to the Maintenance Update on June 2, 2022 :
As a result of those bug fixes, the email address that is used to send proof notifications has changed.
Previously, proof email addresses contained your organization’s subdomain. For example, notifications@[company domain].my.workfront.com
Now, proofiing email addresses no longer contain an organization subdomain. All proof email notifications will come from the following address: notification@my.workfront.com
As a result, we recommend you take the following actions if you haven’t already:
