Live copy overview is a new interface introduced in AEM 6.3. This replaces the blueprint or multi-site manager control center, from the classic UI with a touch UI-enabled interface. Authors who want to use multi-site manager features, no longer have to switch back and forth between the classic and touch UIs.
So, let’s quickly review live copy functionality.
So, we have a candidate country site and a U.S. country site, and each of them has a live copy of an English blueprint. And, that English blueprint, is actually stored in our language masters. So, in this way, we can manage the English site from a central point, our language master, but each country has the flexibility to update or override certain content to fit their requirements. We also have a United Kingdom country site. And so, let’s go ahead and add the English blueprint as a live copy. So, we’ll go to Create live copy and for the live copy source, we’ll choose English from our language masters.
Then for the destination, we’ll choose the UK country site, and then for the live copy Properties, this is going to populate the root of that page, and that will just be English, EN. The rollout config, will be a standard rollout.
Okay, so our live copy has been created.
And as you can see, we’ve got our English site, beneath the UK country and we can see, if we open up this page we can immediately see that we’ve got the UK logo. So, it indicates that we’re in the UK country site, but all of the content here is from that English blueprint.
Now, if we want to manage the live copies for this English blueprint, we can go back to the site’s console and select our English blueprint, under our language masters folder. Expanding the left rail and selecting References, we can see that there are three live copies. So, we’ve got our Canada site, our U.S. site and our UK site. And if we select Live copy overview, we can now manage all three of these live copies from a single UI.
One the left hand side, we can see each of the pages as part of the blueprint.
And in the middle, there is a column for each country site. So, we’ve got Canada, UK and U.S. sites.
Each cell beneath the country represents the live copy for that blueprint page and has a status indicator. The green checkmark indicates that the live copy page is up-to-date with the blueprint.
The clock icon indicates that something has been modified. So this could be that the blueprint has been modified, but the change has not been rolled out to the live copy, or it could indicate that a portion of a live copy page has been changed, and no longer matches the blueprint exactly. The red X indicates that inheritance has been canceled and that this live copy will be excluded from rollouts of the blueprint.
The No symbol indicates that the live copy page is missing.
If we compare the touch UI with the classic UI, we can see that the same information is displayed. On the left hand side, we’ve got our English blueprint master. And in the middle, we’ve got each of our country sites and the corresponding live copy pages. The colored icons indicate the status, very similar to the touch UI.
In the classic UI, you use the tree in the left panel to drill down through the blueprint and see the status of child pages.
In touch UI, this navigation is a little different. To drill down, you simply click the blueprint page and you’re taken to the child pages beneath.
To navigate back up the tree, use the breadcrumbs in the menu bar.
We can select a cell and perform various actions on that live copy page. We could open the page for editing, we can also use the info button to see greater detail about the live copy blueprint, like when it was last modified, or which user performed the rollout.
From this menu, we can synchronize the live copy page with the blueprint. In this case, the men’s blueprint page was modified.
Clicking the Synchronized button, we can roll out these changes to the men’s page in the Canada countryside. Now, the Canada men’s page is up-to-date. Notice that, the US men’s page still shows that the blueprint has been modified. We could synchronize this page individually, or we can select the blueprint page and do a bulk rollout.
This wizard shows the three available live copies that we can roll out to.
We can use the checkboxes on the left, to just choose the U.S. site and only roll out to that one.
The status indicates that the women’s page under the Canada site is no longer in sync, with the women’s blueprint and that it’s been modified. We can use the reset button, to bring this page back in sync with the women’s blueprint.
The dialog warns us that all these local modifications will be lost.
The equipment page underneath the Canada site has the inheritance canceled. We can select this page and click Resume, to resume the inheritance.
Likewise, we can re-select the page and suspend the inheritance. We have the option to suspend just this page, or suspend all the children of this page.
In the case where the live copy does not exist, you need the help of a developer system administrator, to correct this.
Let’s go ahead and edit the experience blueprint page.
So, we’ve opened up the experience blueprint page, and we’ll just edit this text component.
Now, if we open up the page menu, we have the option to roll out this page directly from here.
Or, we can open up the page properties and go to the blueprint tab. Here, we can see the three live copies and we also have a link back to the lab copy overview.
So, we can see that the blueprint has been modified for each of these live copies and we can go ahead and roll it out from here.
So, now we can see that each of the live copies are up-to-date with the changes we made to the blueprint experience page.

Live Copy Overview is a Touch UI interface used for managing live copies and their respective blueprints. This feature, introduced in AEM 6.3, replaces the Classic UI Blueprint Control Center.

AEM 6.3 introduces a new touch UI-enabled interface, for managing blueprint configurations. This replaces the classic UI version. To access this interface, you go to Tools and then, Sites and then you’ll see the blueprints card.
Let’s quickly review the classic UI.
In the classic UI, all of the existing blueprints are stored under the MSM control center, and you can go ahead and create a new blueprint, or you can modify or delete existing blueprints.
Now, if we look at the touch UI version, again, we can see all of the existing blueprints, and we can go ahead and create a brand new blueprint. So, we select the blueprint template, we’ll select a source for our blueprint, and then, we’ll give our blueprint a title.
We can go ahead and click Create and now, our blueprint can be used to create a brand new site or a live copy.
You can also select our blueprint and view the properties, and we can update them here, if we want to.
So, that’s the new blueprint configuration manager introduced in AEM 6.3.
